Understanding Your Current Money Beliefs
To transform your money mindset, you first need to understand your current beliefs about money. Take some time to reflect on your upbringing and past experiences. What messages did you receive about money when you were young? Were there any financial struggles or triumphs that left a lasting impact on you?
For me personally, I thank God that we never went hungry, however, I never had a chance to even learn what it meant to be picky with food because whatever was cooked that day was the only food available to eat. I remember clearly hearing my family talk about not being able to afford milk that week, or me hoping to find coins on the street so we could buy groceries.
My grandma would write shopping lists and send me to the corner grocery stores with the shopping list in hand, and no money to pay the store. She would write a note to the owners to pay later when she had money.
Recognizing How Childhood Experiences Shape Your Money Mindset
It’s important to recognize that your childhood experiences often shape your money mindset. Even if you didn’t have a terrible childhood, (I definitely feel like although I was living in poverty, I truly felt like it was my norm, and to be honest I was a happy child) subtle messages about money can be ingrained in your subconscious. Identify any negative beliefs that may be holding you back.
The milk and groceries memories were long forgotten, however when I started to dig into understanding how I view money, they started to surface again, and I learned that I had a very scarce mentality when it came to money, and no wonder I had so much debt piled up.
Now I’m not saying to take a victim approach and blame these past experiences, this is not what I’m saying, but trauma replays itself again and again until it’s worked through. I knew I had to work through this and overcome that mentality.
Shifting from a Scarcity to an Abundance Mindset
Once we moved to the US things were not really that different for us. We moved from home to home, always living with either one or another of my aunts and uncles. I never really had even a room to call my own. I always had free lunch at school and my clothes were worn until they no longer fit or were truly worn out.
It wasn’t until I turned 15 that I started working at Subway that we (myself and my grandma) moved to a little studio apartment just the two of us. Keep in mind, that I was a high school freshman who now had to focus on school, and on top was providing income to a household of two. It was definitely not easy in the slightest and I struggled. We had to move back to my aunt’s house since my part-time income could not sustain us two.
I then learned about manifestation and the universal laws. I was very intrigued with the subject and studied it, and although I was grasping it as a concept, I was not integrating it into my life. That is, until it clicked fundamentally, in my soul.
One of the most significant shifts you can make is from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset. I began to shift my view and I noticed the abundance our universe offers, it literally unfolded before me. I began to understand that there is an abundance of opportunities and resources in the world. Everywhere you look, there is abundance surrounding us. The Universe is a giver, and I knew I had to be open to receive.
The universe is not limited, and neither are your possibilities.
Practical Tips to Cultivate a Healthy Money Mindset
Here are some practical tips:
- Daily Gratitude Practice: List things you’re grateful for, including financial aspects. For a very long time in the mornings, the first thing I would do was go for a walk and just list every single thing I was grateful for. Now my routine is a lot shorter, but gratefulness is the first state of mind I want to start my day with.
- Budgeting: Create a realistic budget to take control of your finances. The saying “what you focus on expands” is absolutely applicable to establishing the right money mindset, and if you don’t know where your money is going, you will not have control of your finances. Build and cultivate a relationship with your money. Sit down and view it as a date even! It wasn’t until I started doing this that I really started to feel like there was a way out of debt for me. I began to see where I could save, and money leaks that I could repair.
- Education: Invest in financial education to make informed decisions. The best investment you can make is an investment in yourself. Your personal growth can be achieved through trial and error, and experiences, but having someone teach you techniques and modalities that are proven to work saves you the time that could instead be used to share your wonderful skill with the world. Educate yourself on your finances and how to take control of them, because money is a tool to be used for good, and a good person like you can only change the world for the better if you have the resources to do so.
Exercises to Reframe Limiting Beliefs
Try this exercise: Write down a limiting belief about money, and then reframe it into a positive affirmation. For example, if you believe, “I’m always broke,” change it to “I am in control of my finances.”
You have to understand that beliefs are not truths, and most of the time, the beliefs you hold are not even yours to begin with!
You are an abundant, deserving being, and you are here to thrive, so get out of the box you’ve been put in, and create new empowering thoughts for yourself.
How to Set Financial Goals Aligned with Your True Desires
Set clear financial goals that resonate with your passions and dreams. Visualize your ideal financial future and create a plan to get there. Goals aligned with your heart are more motivating.
Don’t worry about what society, or even your parents are expecting of you. Dig deep within yourself and listen to your intuition, to your soul. When you realize what your life purpose is, and actively aim to share your gifts with the world, you quantum leap into your highest calling.
The Power of Visualization and Affirmations
Visualize your financial success regularly, and work on it. As I stated earlier, you have to treat your finances as a relationship. A loving, caring relationship that you want to keep. Pair this with affirmations like, “I am attracting wealth and abundance into my life.” This combination can be a powerful tool for transformation. Keep it at the forefront, and prioritize its importance. People will say things like “money is the root of all evil” and “money doesn’t make you happy”, however, they fail to understand that money is a necessary tool, and it is very much required. You want this tool and so you need to focus on keeping it flowing in your life.
Building a Sustainable Financial Plan
Work on creating a sustainable financial plan that includes saving, investing, donating, and debt management. Your financial plan should align with your goals and values.
I know it’s hard to think about a couple of these topics when you’re in debt or living paycheck to paycheck, I know it was definitely hard for me to even begin to think about saving. Building these habits now, however, ensures that they extend into that future version of you that has more funds to give and save then. Start now.
Overcoming Common Objections and Excuses
Address common objections like “I’m not good with money” by taking small, consistent steps towards financial literacy. Look for proof that shows otherwise and build on that! Remember, every expert was once a beginner, I mean take it from me, you know my story.
