Understanding Your Journey to Self-Improvement
You’ve made it. You’re here because you made the choice. That in and of itself is a huge turning point. What choice exactly? The choice and decision to better yourself.
You know you’ve got more to give. Whether it’s to yourself, your friends, family, business, finances, or whatever it is, you know there is a greatness within you that is waiting to flourish. I’m here to let you know, from personal experience, that becoming the best version of yourself is not a destination; it’s a lifelong journey. It’s about consistently evolving, learning, and growing to align with your truest self. When you make this choice, it transforms, transmutes, and changes every facet of your life, from your mindset and relationships to your career and well-being.
And, before we dive any deeper, I want you to, for just the time it takes to read this post, allow this information to enter your mind without limiting beliefs like “change is hard”, “impossible” or “I can’t do this because X” and just let the information enter your mind as a possibility of things to have done.
I know you can do me this one favor, I’m rooting for you!
Strategies for Becoming Your Best Self
Let’s break down one of the first limiting beliefs that come to mind when the topic of self-improvement comes up. That limiting belief is that “bettering oneself is hard, not easy, a tenacious process”. I want to help you reframe that, just for the duration of this post, and put “Wouldn’t it be fun if x” into the mix instead of and without “but I can’t do X because it’s hard”.
For example, wouldn’t it be fun if I got a raise at my job?
Wouldn’t it be fun if I figured out how to spend more time with my family?
Wouldn’t it be fun if we finally took that dream vacation?
In this way, you allow the possibility of entertaining the idea of a better future.
But what if you’re not sure where to begin? This is where we will start.
First begin by understanding who you are, your strengths, weaknesses, values, and aspirations. Really it can be as easy as just asking yourself these questions. But if you’ve got the time, sit down and write about these things.
Dig deep into the whys, write about certain times when maybe your strengths played a pivotal role, or about how your value for X became apparent after a certain life event, and why it’s crucial to nurture X. Regular self-reflection fosters self-awareness, a cornerstone of personal growth and it’s crucial to understanding yourself.
Set Clear Goals
Define your goals and aspirations across different areas of your life – career, relationships, health, and any and all goals you want to set. Having clear goals provides direction and purpose, motivating you to strive for continuous improvement. Once you have set out a clearly defined goal, it’s easier to deconstruct it into smaller tangible steps, no matter how “delulu” it might be to others.
Continuous Learning
Embrace a growth mindset and commit to lifelong learning. Whether through books, courses, or experiences, every opportunity is a chance to expand your knowledge and skills.
Healthy Habits
Prioritize your well-being by adopting healthy habits. Exercise, nutrition, and adequate sleep contribute to your physical and mental vitality.
Incorporating simple things like a 10-minute walk, or maybe one balanced meal are great starting points to lead to that version of you that you envision. Ask yourself, “Would the version of me that is fit and healthy really Door Dash Taco Bell every night?” (this was actually me at one point, I confess).
If you’ve been into personal development for any amount of time, you’ve probably either read or heard of the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. It really is a great book that dives into understanding habits, and applying good habits to your everyday life! Highly recommend!
Positive Mindset
Before I dive into this topic I want to make it very clear that as humans, we are supposed to experience all the feels. All of them. It is our birthright and I am in no way telling you you have to be happy all the time. I personally believe that it’s physically impossible to be happy 24/7 and that is not what we’re aiming at here. What we’re aiming at is to allow the emotions to pass. Yes, you are angry, feel the anger, acknowledge it, and let it flow. Emotions are just energy in motion. It is not supposed to stay in the body.
Cultivate an observer’s outlook on your life. This helps to challenge negative thoughts, practice gratitude, and allows you to envision the positivity that could come from different scenarios that are maybe not so pleasant to experience.
Embrace Challenges
Why is it that when a baby is learning to walk, everyone is rooting for that baby? It is never “No baby, don’t learn to walk, it’s too hard”.
And the baby never even begins to question whether or not they should even try to approach walking, as soon as they have the strength, they dive right in!
We can learn this from babies, and rather than avoiding challenges, embrace them as opportunities for growth. Stepping out of your comfort zone accelerates your personal development. Take the baby approach. 🙂
Cultivate Resilience
Another thing we can learn from babies!
If you’ve ever seen a baby learn to walk, you know that it takes them a while to stop tumbling over, and falling on their butts. I mean there’s a whole toddler phase for that reason. They toddle and take tumbles every now and then!
But how resilient are those little boogers? Resilience is key to navigating setbacks and failures.
Resilience is in your nature, really, I’ve just proved it to you with the baby learning to walk. Remember the ability to bounce back stronger and wiser from challenges.
