Real plants from my real home. All beginner-friendly, low-maintenance, and perfect for tiny spaces.

If you’re looking for the easiest indoor plants for small spaces, I want to share the ones I personally grow at home. Plants that are forgiving, beginner-friendly, and perfect for tiny living.

But here’s the thing:
I only like recommending plants I actually grow, the ones that survive in a real, lived-in home with pets, people, and everyday chaos.

So this isn’t a generic list.
These are the plants in my house, and why they’ve earned their place here.

This Post is All About The Easiest Indoor Plants for Small Spaces (Plants I Actually Grow). All are linked in case you’d like to buy your own!

1. Pothos is One of the Easiest Indoor Plants for Small Spaces

If you want an instant confidence boost, start with pothos.

Why I love it:

  • grows quickly
  • survives low light
  • tolerates inconsistent watering
  • trails beautifully down shelves (I recently learned that pothos leaves get bigger if they grow upwards though, so I might start making some moss poles for mine.

It’s the plant I recommend to anyone who thinks they’re “bad at plants.”
This is one of the easiest indoor plants for small spaces if you want something that grows quickly without much effort.

2. Swiss Cheese Monstera (Monstera adansonii)

Swiss cheese is one of my favorite small-space plants because it has all the charm of a big Monstera — but on a much gentler, more compact scale. The leaves have those beautiful cut-outs, but the plant itself grows lightly and climbs or trails, depending on what you give it.

Why it works for tiny homes:

  • grows upward OR downward — your choice
  • light, airy foliage that doesn’t feel heavy in a small room
  • thrives in medium light
  • adapts to many spaces (shelves, window corners, hanging planters)

It brings a soft, sculptural feel without taking over the room.

3. Peace Lily (Soft, Elegant, and Honest)

I do have to say, they are very dramatic, but when not, peace lilies bring a gentle, calming energy.

Why I keep one:

  • it tells you exactly when it wants water (the leaves droop, I’m telling you sooo dramatic)
  • lush green leaves
  • occasional white blooms
  • thrives in medium light

It’s one of the most emotionally responsive plants — you always know what it needs.

Peace lilies are one of the easiest indoor plants for small spaces because they’re low maintenance and thrive in medium light.

4. Dracaena (A Structured, Low-Maintenance Favorite)

Dracaena is one of the easiest taller plants you can grow. It has a clean, architectural shape that instantly brings height to small spaces.

Why I love mine:

  • super forgiving with watering (I’ll admit in the above pic she’s looking a lil thirsty)
  • thrives in medium to bright indirect light
  • grows vertically, saving floor space
  • adds structure without visual clutter

This is the plant I lean on when I want something that feels “finished” but still effortless.

5. Money Tree (A Small Home Favorite)

Money trees grow slowly, stay contained, and add structure to a room.

Why I love mine:

  • sculptural shape
  • brings height to small corners
  • thrives in bright indirect light
  • doesn’t need constant attention

It adds grounding energy without demanding space.

6. Herbs (Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Mint, Yarrow, Marshmallow)

easiest indoor plants for small spaces-herbs

Herbs are some of the most beginner-friendly plants, and honestly, the most rewarding. Harvesting them, drying them out, and actually using them in teas, and meals just gives me such a vibeeeee. It feels so good.

Why they work beautifully in small homes:

  • compact
  • fragrant
  • visually soft
  • useful in cooking or tea
  • grow well in small pots or hydroponic systems (I grew the above yarrow and mint in the Gardyn)

Even one little herb pot on the counter can shift the whole vibe of your kitchen.

These I usually start from seed. You can find them online at places like Eden Brothers.

7. Jalapeño + Habanero Peppers (Surprisingly Small-Space Friendly!)

Peppers look intimidating, but they’re actually very container-friendly. I’ve got about 6 pepper plants going in hydroponics right now, so it feels like an endless supply of peppers!

Why they’re great:

  • grow upward, not outward
  • love warmth + bright light
  • easy to prune
  • high reward (you get real peppers!)

If you’re hydroponics-curious, peppers are one of the most satisfying plants to grow.
