Best Hydroponics Systems for Beginners: What I use at Home

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost. Please read full disclosure for more information.

When I first heard about hydroponics it was through a viral Instagram reel, Homegirl was growing food INSIDE her NEW YORK apartment! I thought food was only grown outside, or you know the little pot of herbs here and there. But she’s growing REAL food inside; eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, it was wild to me! I went down the hydroponics systems for beginners rabbit hole. Fast forward to now and I’m hooked. I’m growing lettuce, herbs, and little jalapeno peppers in my own kitchen, it’s amazing!

I’ve experimented with a few different hydroponic systems, from DIY jars which I think I’ve got 4 right now to full-on automated towers. My Gardyn is my baby. Today I’m sharing four of the set ups I actually use at home with their pros, cons, and who I think each is best for.

This post is all about the Best Hydroponics Systems for Beginners

1. Kratky Method (DIY + Budget Friendly)

If you want to try hydroponics with basically zero investment, the Kratky method is where to start. All you need is a jar or container, a net cup, and a nutrient solution.

Why I love it:

  • Super low cost.
  • Almost no maintenance.
  • Perfect for herbs and greens.

Things to know:

  • Works best for small plants.
  • You’ll eventually need to top off water/nutrients.
  • I use a regular mason jar and cover it with socks to prevent algae growth.

Beginner tip: Start with basil or lettuce they thrive in this setup, however I currently have a jalapeno and an apple tree sapling in a jar and they are doing great!

2. The Best Hydroponics Systems for Beginners: Gardyn (Smart + Automated)

Gardyn is like the Tesla of hydroponics. It was voted TIME Invention of the year apparently too. It’s a full smart garden system that practically grows food for you. Mine sits in my kitchen (they all do) and doubles as a piece of decor.

Why I love it:

  • Totally automated (lights, water, app reminders).
  • Yields a TON of food.
  • Beautiful design and I personally think it looks amazing.

Things to know:

  • Pricey compared to other options.
  • Needs a bit of space but honestly not too much.
  • You do have to pay for a subscription to the app if you want more in depth guidance, but you can definitely still make it work without.

Perfect if you want a “set it and forget it” system. I usually just top off water once a week and clean it thoroughly every month.

3. AeroGarden Harvest (Countertop Classic)

This is the system that got me hooked. I currently have the Harvest Elite, and the Harvest 2.0. Both compact, fit right on the counter, and great for herbs or small veggies.

Why I love them both:

  • Easy for beginners.
  • Comes with seed pods ready to go.
  • Fits in small kitchens.

Things to know:

  • Limited space, has 6 pods (slots?) but once seedlings get bigger it does get tight.
  • Better for herbs than full veggies.

Best if you want fresh herbs without grocery trips.

4. Amazon Hydro Systems (Budget-Friendly Kits)

There are tons of hydroponic kits on Amazon and I’ve tried a couple. I’ve also tried one from TJ Max that was 20 bucks, and a joke.

The Amazon set ups have yet to let me down though! They’re inexpensive, come with the basics, and let you experiment without spending too much.

Why I love them:

  • Affordable entry point.
  • Many options to choose from.
  • Good for testing the waters before upgrading.

Things to know:

  • Quality varies by brand.
  • It could be hit or miss so make sure you check out the reviews.

A solid starting point if you’re curious but not ready to invest big is this URUQ System. I honestly only have good things to say. Quality product for sure, it has my habaneros growing, its actually one of my original seeds!

Uruq makes a great entry level hydroponics system for beginners

Best Hydroponics Systems for Beginners: (My Recommendation)

If you’re brand new, I’d start with either the Kratky method (DIY + basically free) or the URUQ to see how you like it. Once you’re hooked, upgrading to something like Gardyn or AeroGarden is an amazing next step.
